Duet for Clarinet and Bass Clarinet – a fascination with intervals

Composed in February, 2006
Revised January, 2008

Featured on my senior recital.

Performance Notes:
The piece began as an exploration of perhaps my favorite interval: the major ninth. The first movement features it more heavily than the others, with the main theme becoming a tenth later on. As I was writing, I began to treat the two instruments as though they were one, polyphonic clarinet. At times the two play consistently together, and at other times they are quite apart. In many places, they trade lines back and forth at unison. This piece allowed me to meditate on the individual vibrations of each interval and discover which ones I liked (and which ones I liked a lot), and what they meant to me.

The Diary of Chris P. Bacon: an adventure for bassoon and piano

Composed in 2006

Written for Chris Bustard—a good friend and a talented bassoonist. The piece follows the story of a ships captain named Chris Bacon who goes in search of the mythical island of Kosrae, and all of its treasures. The work opens at the docks, then the ship sets sail, followed by some happenings at sea. Pirates soon attack and the ship is destroyed, but Chris P. Bacon drifts on some debris right to the shore of Kosrae.
